It’s time to celebrate bees!! And thank the tiny country of Slovenia that made this day reality.
From the World Bee Day website:
Slovenia proposed that the United Nations (UN) proclaim May 20 as World Bee Day. On December 20, 2017, following three years of efforts at the international level, the UN Member States unanimously approved Slovenia’s proposal, thus proclaiming May 20 as World Bee Day.
In addition to being a major pollinator, bees contribute to the mitigation of climate change and environmental conservation. In the long-term, the protection of bees and the beekeeping sector can help reduce poverty and hunger, as well as preserve a healthy environment and biodiversity.
Other things I did not know about Slovenia’s beekeeping tradition:
Beekeeping began more than 230 years ago with Vienna’s first teacher of beekeeping, Anton Janša.
The country has more than 11,000 beekeepers working with more than 205,000 bee families.
Slovenia is home to the Carniolan honeybee, which is characterised by its calmness, work rate and an excellent orientation.
Slovenian beekeepers can be trained to offer apitherapy. One treatment is offered in a bee house where a patient can simply lie down on a recliner or bed above beehives. The air can help the patient’s respiratory system and the buzzing has a relaxing effect. Some apitherapists also offer honey massages and thermal beeswax therapy.
And if you did not see Angelina Jolie’s portrait with the bees, be sure to check this out on the National Geographic website.
So hats off to honey bees!!
