During this time of pandemics, political unrest and uncertainty, you don’t need much of a reason to celebrate.
Well, I have a darn good reason for you to kick up your heels and have some fun. Saturday, August 15 is National Honey Bee Day.
We all know WHY a celebration is in order – bees are essential to our food system – so here’s a list of WAYS you can celebrate.
Fun Ways to Celebrate National Honey Bee Day
1. Eat a toasted English muffin slathered with honey.
2. Take a picture of a bee visiting a flower.
3. Put a few pebbles in a shallow bowl of water for honey bees to drink.
4. Enjoy a dish of blueberries, strawberries, almonds or other foods that rely on bees for pollination.
5. Practice doing a bee “waggle dance” – shake your bootie!
6. Buy a jar of local honey.
7. Light a genuine beeswax candle – it burns the cleanest of any candle you’ll ever have.
8. Thank your local beekeeper!
9. Plan to put more flowers in next year’s garden (and let those dandelions grow!).
10. Learn more about bees and our native pollinators.
National Honey Bee Day was started in 2009 by a small group of beekeepers who petitioned for and obtained a formal proclamation by the USDA the honoring honey bees and beekeeping. It was signed by an Iowan, Tom Vilsack, then head of the USDA.
Its purpose is to “bring together beekeepers, bee associations, as well as other interested groups to connect with the communities to advance beekeeping.”
National Honey Bee Day is managed by HoneyLove.org, a Los Angeles-based honey bee educational non-profit.
