December?

Who would have thought the bees would be flying in 50+ degree weather in December? But the bees are loving it!

Here is a video showing their flight to and from the hive in slow motion.

So why do bees fly this time of year? Obviously no plants are producing nectar or pollen, I doubt that trees have much resin/propolis available (used by bees as glue to seal cracks in the hive).

The only other choices would be to collect water or to relieve themselves. As I have reported earlier, honey bees are very clean and will not poop inside the hive, so I am thankful they were able to get out and take care of business.

Who knows? Maybe they’ll find a forgotten hummingbird feeder with a little sugar water in it. Or, as the case may be, they were just getting out to stretch their wings.

We humans know about cabin fever – we’ll take an unseasonably warm December day any time!
